Delaware public education system has been struggling. Only 60% of our students graduate in four years. This number is worse for Hispanic and Black students. This had been a problem for a number of years and little has been done to aggressively address the problems. Youth are our most valuable resources. We must address this system and focus on creating success for our youth. Their failure will cost us dearly in the future. To fix this problem we need to do the following: • Provide greater support for teachers in the classroom • Make sure that money goes into the classroom and not the administration. Place a cap on what can go toward admin • Explore the development of more vocational classes • Develop an alternative to DSTP. Teach students to think not to take tests • Help the education system reflect the needs of current and potential employers of the state • Provide support for the education system to better prepare youth for the labor market in Delaware. • Focus on skills, not passing the standardized test • Expand vocational educational programs so that more youth have opportunities to pursue a skilled trade • Develop legislation that would encourage more people to become teachers and expand the opportunity to pursue a skilled trade • Make college and trade school education affordable to those individuals who want to attend |
