Deregulation has cost us a great deal. The cost of electricity increased at least 57%. With the economic downturn this is a serious problem. Being able to survive day to day is much more of a challenge. Legislation was passed to require the Delmarva to purchase a portion of its energy from renewable sources. The fluctuation of such sources would be less volatile and damaging to our environment than what is currently being used. Delmarva fought the purchase of power from Bluewater spending a great deal of money and time. Finally this deal was able to be completed but it was clear that special interests controlled a great deal of the action. It is critical that our legislators continue to be vigilant with regard to monitoring the action of the energy industry. Without competition there is little to stop exploitation by the energy company. Our legislators need to do the following: • Monitor the activity of the energy companies • Encourage greater use of renewable sources • Provide energy credits for individuals who are investing in appliances or home repair that would create greater energy efficiency • Encourage competition for the purchase of energy |
